I’m always asked when I started with my love of photography. Well, here it goes - I can say, it was pretty young. And I don’t mean that I took photos sometimes accidently, I mean, my mom would develop film and realize she didn’t take those photos and they all had a funny angle: a perspective of a two year old. I’m truly happiest when I’m out in the field camera in-hand.
My family realized I had an interest and they nurtured it along in any way they could. I opened my business in high school and then moved to Colorado to attend Colorado Mountain College. The Rockies were calling and they had a professional photography program. I held a few jobs while in college: at a golf course, babysitting, and even housekeeping for a Saudi Arabian prince (yes, I did clean his “throne”) but all the while building my photography business was at the forefront of my aspirations.
Once I graduated I began working for Alice Koelle Photography in Aspen, Colorado. My time with Alice and her team was a true gift. I learned far more from each of them that I ever could have imagined; I worked in Alice’s office running her production and one day she told me if I bought a business suit, I could shoot for her. I did. I was able to work with and photograph some inspiring individuals during those 3+ years that I was with AKP. Their friendship and guidance throughout that time hold a special place in my heart.
In 2008, my husband and I moved to the countryside of Virginia and instead of my business “MJM Photography” always trying to squeeze into my life, it was suddenly my only source of income. It began to grow and I’m proud to say that photography has been a great friend to me. I love my job and I hope it shows in my work. Somehow I’ve managed to combine my love of photography, working with animals and children, supporting local businesses, making a difference in the world, and farming all into one life. I’m not sure how I do it and some days I’m not so sure I do do it but I’ve had a pretty interesting ride thus far so I guess we’ll see where the river will flow…
Please visit my website for some of my favorite images. I also have more detailed stories about my work with Flavor Magazine and Mount Vernon Farm if you follow the links on the toolbar above.
If there is something you do not see there, then email me and I probably have something to show you. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and I hope I have the honor of getting to know you some day.
